This is a visit to the “other side” of the Grand Canal to the sestiere (district) of Dorsoduro. Not on the usual tourist itinerary of Venice this is a fun and informative tour in the company of an English-speaking guide. You will learn of the folklore of this interesting district and see some hidden gems; a Venice away from the tourist hordes – a Venice of meandering waterways, little alleys, art galleries and locals. A tour of the “real” Venice!
A Haunted House and Refuge for Children
The Palazzo Dario or Ca’Dario is a castle with an interesting past. Reputed to be haunted, many of its previous owners have met with mysterious deaths. Join us if you dare!! We also take you to the site of the Canal Bank of the Incurables or Fondamenta degli Incurabli. Your guide will recount the interesting history of this Renaissance hospital/orphanage where a music education was provided for its young conservati (orphans)
Celebrated Sites
There are a number of other “must see” sights when in Venice. You will see the famous Harry’s Bar where Ernest Hemingway raised a glass of prosecco to a “good days work”. There is the Peggy Guggenheim Collection or Palazzo Venier dei Leoni with its wonderful Istrian stone façade and canal terrace and the Palazzo Contarini-Fasan where Desdemona lived, the reputed inspiration for Shakespeare’s Othello.Optional Gondola Ride
We shall be happy to pre-arrange a gondola ride, a lovely relaxing tour in the company of a local gondolier along the back canals of Venice. You can gaze upon the ancient building that line the canal banks; quintessential Venice! Each gondola takes six people. The perfect end to a perfect tour away from the crowds!
